The Last of London for Awhile

We're already getting weary on day three, and it's a 2 1/2 week trip!  Tuesday was devoted to the MSU choir and their final concert.  We began the day by going to the one large grocery store we know well, near Earl's Court in the southwest for party supplies...then to St Paul's by tube with all our groceries and paper goods in tow.  We stopped by the Marks and Spencer where we'd ordered our food for the reception for 100 people, then made our way just down the street to St Martin within Ludgate where our reception was to be held.

I'd been dealing by email with a lady named Pauline; she told me she'd be unavailable but that her colleague Nigel would let us in.  Just before he arrived, I realized I knew Nigel from my St Paul's choir, so that was a pleasant surprise to see him and catch up.  We barely got things set up, dashed over to the concert (and paid a large price, to see the cathedral, when we only wanted a half hour concert!).  My friend Gillian had saved us seats on second row center, so we felt quite fortunate.  The concert was fabulous, and the students and Dr Webb aquitted themselves well.  This picture was pirated...no photos in St Paul's!

After, we zipped back down the hill a few paces to make ready for the 100 guests, with help from Gillian and Nigel.  When all arrived Nigel gave a bit of history (Christopher Wren church from 1670, right after the Great Fire), Gloria and I welcomed them, and they ate, drank, and sang.  Lovely reception, and they were very appreciative.  Both Nigel and Gillian commented both on the talent of the choir, and on their behavior, courtesy, and appreciation for what we'd done.

Back to the hotel for an hour off our feet, then ready to meet near Earl's Court again for the farewell dinner.  A truly nice and memorable evening, and we were grateful to be part of Guy's farewell tour.  Pictured, one of our former church and Sunday School kids, Ted Kelley, a member of the choir whom we hadn't seen in about 8 or 10 years!  Great to have him along.

Wednesday, finally a day for us!  After a breakfast with previous flatmate/friend, Elizabeth between our houses, we moved slowly, and I booked us tickets to see Angela Lansbury in Blithe Spirit, a play about a wacky medium (played by her) who conjures up a spirit that is not happy with her husband's second marriage.  She's 88 years old; this is her first visit to London stage in 40 years, and she was marvelous!  What a joy to see this vital legend do her stuff.  So fortunate to have made this connection.

Dinner that evening back in our old Hornton Street grounds, our first home in London, with landlord Tadeusz and his wife Vera.  It's always a joy to be with them...through vodka, wine, port and great company.  We left a bit before midnite, off to bed, and up the next morning for the trip to airport and flight to Budapest.  A great London journey, but a start to some new adventures.
